Vegan Cook Book

I just found a new cook book...  that is....

-vegan
-low fat
-not complicated
-clear
-easy to understand

and it uses familiar ingredients!

The photography is wonderful, and will leave you with your mouth watering.  Even my picky eaters were excited when they thumbed through this book.

It is

The Happy Herbivore
by Lindsay S. Nixon

I was lucky enough to receive this as a gift, but the back of the book says the list price is $19.95.

Exceptional Vegan Cookie Recipe

We just tried these cookies, both with and without chocolate chips.  They are excellent!!

The only change to the recipe that we made was to use 1 cup Soft Winter Wheat (Pastry Flour), and 1 cup of the Rice Flour.

We have not tried to add the ice cream to create the ice cream sandwiches.... but that looks tasty too.

Counterculturalism

Being vegan in a Christian community is unusual, and downright countercultural!!
It takes intentional effort to build friendships that are outside
of the typical pot luck or hot dog barbecue setting.

And some days this makes me sad.

Another fun Kale T-Shirt

Today I found another fun T-Shirt.  This one is from a company in Vermont.  This one actually comes in several colors.  They even offer a free  "Eat More Kale"sticker on their website........

Forks Over Knives out on DVD

We just watched the new (DVD) movie Forks Over Knives.
It is a well  organized, clearly presented discussion of the health benefits of a plant based diet.
This is a DVD that we plan to share with family and friends who are confused about veganism.
The movie was even appealing to my elementary aged children.
Yay!  We will need to order a second copy to pass around!!

Goods vs. Ultimates

It is a balancing act to remain focused on the "main things" in life.

My nasty sin nature is sorely tempted to dive into an interest--
and dislodge the Lord from His place in my life.

I can easily become wrapped up in my passions
and quickly find myself worshipping an idol,  a functional-god.

I found this quote by Tim Keller this week,

"Sin isn’t only doing bad things, it is more fundamentally making good things into ultimate things. Sin is building your life and meaning on anything, even a very good thing, more than on God."

Veganism is a good thing in my life.
Lord help me resist making it an ultimate thing.

Homemade Vegan Dog Food

Last week I found a book called Dogs and Cats Go Vegetarian.
The book is not new, but the information is still solid.
In the book they recommend a supplement called "Vegedog" to use in making homemade dog food.
Today I found the supplement sold online (Yay!) at vegepet.com.
Has anyone else ever tried this supplement or the recipes that are online at vegepet?

Vegan Dog Food??

In August, we are going to be getting a new puppy!  A friend has a litter of pups & we have selected a little female puppy.  My kids have already agreed to the name...  Gracie.

BUT

I need ideas of how to feed this dog!  Does anyone know of any vegetarian or vegan dog foods or dog food recipes?

Dinner Guests

Ever notice... that once people discover that you're vegan,
you are not invited over for dinner anymore?

I still love to have people over to my house,
and I usually  make something vegetarian and familiar.  Spaghetti, hearty veggie soup, etc.

But I have noticed that we do not have many people invite us over lately.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

First Corinthians sermon

Heard my favorite ever sermon that related to veganism.  Pastor states his church's position on veganism and vegetarianism.   (The sermon is on a section of First Corinthians 8.)

I love Jesus.
That is my spiritual choice.
The most important choice.
A choice I love to share with my community, my friends, my family.
I am vegan.
That is a healthy choice, a kind choice.
Not my most important choice.
A choice I discuss if you ask.
I love Jesus.
But I don't want to share your pepperoni.
I brought my own lunch, thanks.

KALE shirt

We just watched the Get Healthy Now Red DVD, cooking demos video.  The recipes were excellent.  One of the ladies doing the demos had a fun! shirt on that said KALE on the front.  At first glance you might think it is a YALE shirt.   We have found several navy blue KALE shirts at our local Whole Foods store.  They also have a fantastic navy blue KALE hooded sweatshirt.

FYI  the EAT MORE KALE t-shirts are  from a small business in Vermont at EatMoreKale.com.  They have several colors, we love the dark green seen in the men's sizes the best.

I own one of each of these shirts, and love them both.

Bumper stickers.

I LOVE my 2  new bumper stickers:

Eden Was Vegan
Which was from Christian Vegetarian Association
http://www.all-creatures.org/cva/default.htm

and

LoveUsNotEatUs
from the Love Us Not Eat Us  web site.
http://www.loveusnoteatus.com/

I love watching folks look at the cuddly animals on the LoveUsNotEatUs sticker, then they read the words, then they walk away.

Vegan Recipes

I have searched my local library....  I have looked through my Vegetarian cook books.  But it is difficult to find any fat-free or low fat vegan recipes.  Creativity, I lack.  Recipes I need.

May 25, 2011

I've been a Christian for many years, and a vegetarian for about a decade.  Lately I have also put aside dairy, and thus have become vegan.  Today I stumbled across a sermon titled "Vegans are Satanic."  It amazes me that so many people are convinced that a  person cannot be a conservative Christian and a vegan.
